You remember the descriptions of the First Battle of Bull Run when all of Washington’s high society rode out in their fine carriages and horses to picnic under the shady trees and watch their Union boys send the Yankees packing?  Did they get the shock of their lives when the Rebel musket balls whizzed over their heads and the Union soldiers ran for their lives from the field?  Or similarly, the Israelis in southern Israel who took lawn chairs out to watch the IDF smash Gaza to smithereens in 2009?  Here’s a picture of another group of expectant, thrilled Israelis watching the action.

That’s what the foreign press corps appears to be doing now in Tel Aviv in preparation for an attack on Iran.  They’re renting the right to put film crews and reporters on the city’s rooftops (Hebrew) during the upcoming war in order to cover the anticipated Iranian counterattack.  That way they can get great photo ops and pictures of missiles wreaking havoc on the city. What a story!  What a feast for the eyes!  Other news organizations like CBS, Fox News, and NBC are sending their senior producers to Israel to scope out the place in case they have to send in the big boys–the news anchors and senior correspondents (especially since no one can report from Teheran!).

We can’t wait!  I don’t know why I should have to point out that this is irony.  But there are some right-wingers who have neither a sense of irony nor humor.  So it’s for them I guess.

The article, written by “a former CIA operative” says, “the Iranian government, through a website proxy, has laid out the legal and religious justification for the destruction of Israel and the slaughter of its people.…The doctrine includes [preemptive strikes] wiping out Israeli assets and Jewish people worldwide.“

The source of this sabre rattling is an article on a Farsi website by one “Alireza Forghani, a conservative analyst and a strategy specialist in Khamenei’s camp.”

However, an Israeli website identifies Alireza Forghani as merely “an Iranian blogger:”

“Alireza Forghani, a computer engineer, wrote in his essay that Tehran should exploit the West’s dawdling over a strike on Iran to “wipe out Israel” by 2014 - that is, before President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s term runs out. The post was widely covered in the Iranian media on Saturday.”

So rather than a government spokesman, Forghani is really “a blogger,” with a two year time horizon for a “preemptive attack.”

This is how the Zionists beat the drum for war.

And what did Khamenei actually say?

The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution said the regional uprisings will bring about decline and isolation for the Zionist regime and stressed:

“One of the outcomes of these movements is decline and isolation for the Zionist regime, which is very important, because the Zionist regime is truly a cancerous tumor in the region and it must be, and will be, cut off.”

Saying the “Zionist regime” is a cancerous tumor is hardly the same as the  advocating preemptive attacks and the genocide of every Jew on earth.
It sounds like regime change to me. Even Israelis would welcome that.

But the Zionists and their many proxies want you to believe the worst, because they want to sucker the US into another self-destructive world war. Russia, China and even Pakistan have said they will support Iran.

BTW, why is it OK for Pakistan to have nuclear weapons but not Iran? Why is it OK for Israel to have more than 200 nuclear warheads? But we know,  WMD’s are just an excuse for aggression and war. Iraq proved that.

A diplomat based in Islamabad said on Sunday that an Israeli attack on Iran would force Pakistan to support a Iranian response, according to the Israeli website Ynetnews.com.

The diplomat did not say if the Pakistani retaliation would be diplomatic or involve a conventional military or nuclear response.

Although estimates of Pakistan’s nuclear stockpile vary, it is believed the Islamic country has between 70 and 90 warheads. In 2000, U.S. military and intelligence sources put the number at 100. In 2007, retired PakistaniBrigadier-General Feroz Khan told a Pakistani newspaper that his country has “about 80 to 120 genuinewarheads.”

Pakistan also has a number of delivery system for its nuclear weapons, including thermonuclear MIRV-equipped medium range ballistic missiles with ranges up to 2500 kilometers. It also has cruise missiles and is believed to be working on tactical nuclear weapons.
In August of 2011, it was reported that theUnited States considers Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal a threat and it has a “snatch-and-grab” plan for a worse case scenario.

Both Russia and China have said that an attack on Iran would be an attack on their national security.

“Iran is our close neighbor, just south of the Caucasus. Should anything happen to Iran, should Iran get drawn into any political or military hardships, this will be a direct threat to our national security,” Dmitry Rogozin, Russia’s deputy prime minister and former envoy to NATO, said in mid-January.

“China will not hesitate to protect Iran even with a third world war,” said Major General Zhang Zhaozhong in December.

Two Iranian naval ships have docked in the Saudi port of Jeddah. Iranian officials say the move aims to project the country’s “power on the open seas” and “confront Iranophobia.”

The supply ship Kharg and destroyer Shaid Qandi docked on Saturday in the Red Sea port in line with orders from the Islamic Republic’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to Iran’s news agency, Fars.

“This mission aims to show the power of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the open seas and to confront Iranophobia,” Fars quoted navy commander Admiral Habibollah Sayari as saying.

The commander added that the mission would last between 70 and 80 days, but did not specify its route.

Tehran says boosting its naval presence in international waters is in part motivated by the need to protect Iranian ships from Somali pirates. This is why Iranian vessels were deployed to the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden last year. In February 2011, for the first time ever, it also sent two naval vessels into the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal.

The rise in Iran’s naval activity comes amid a steep deterioration of its relations with the West. Its ties with Saudi Arabia are also in poor health, and have gone downhill fast since America accused Tehran of masterminding a plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to Washington.

As if that weren’t enough, relations between Tehran and Riyadh deteriorated further after EU countries agreed to impose sanctions on Iran’s oil exports over the country’s nuclear program. In return, Tehran assured the European Union that it is not afraid of its sanctions and that the EU would be the one to suffer. However, Saudi Arabia quickly offered to make up for any shortfall in Europe’s oil supplies. Tehran, in response, called on Riyadh to reconsider, saying its move was unfriendly.

The EU oil embargo has also increased tensions in the Strait of Hormuz – a vital link for oil transit between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.  Iran has threatened to block the Strait in the past, and its determination was underlined when a senior official said Iran would “definitely” close the Strait of Hormuz if the EU oil embargo disrupted the export of crude oil.

The situation around the Strait and the Iranian nuclear program – which the country states is purely peaceful – has already prompted Washington to send squadrons of war ships into the area, while Britain and France have expressed willingness to back the US navy in opposing attempts by Iran to block the Strait.

The Israeli Deputy PM added fuel to the fire, claiming that Iran has also succeeded in building a long-range missile capable of putting the US within its reach. These latest statements are very much in line with the position of Israel and its allies who are accusing Iran of using its nuclear industry to mask plans to develop nuclear arms, a charge official Tehran has frequently and vehemently denied.

The gravity of the crisis became particularly apparent when US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Israel could attack Iran in the next few months. The attack would allegedly occur before it enters a so-called “immunity zone”, ie: before Iran has time to fortify its nuclear facilities against attack.

The tsunami was caused by nuclear bombs in the sea and the Fukushima explosion and meltdown was caused by mini-nukes hidden in cameras installed by an Israeli security firm. When we compare the  6.8-magnitude earthquake which devastated Kobe, Japan January 17, 1995 with Fukushima, the evidence does not stack up.

A quick Google Images search of Kobe reveals incredible destruction of buildings, bridges, elevated highways, and other infrastructure.

The Fukushima quake, magnitude 9.0, struck about 70 km off the coast of Japan on March 11, 2011.

It sent a 15-meter tsunami crashing over perfectly undamaged bridges, houses, roads, and cars – over a populace which had not been warned of the incoming tsunami, because there was no mag 9.0 earthquake. They were taken completely off-guard. Yet helicopters were waiting, and people all over Japan got to watch the tsunami roll in on live TV.

What on earth was going on? Ordinarily, the Japanese people are warned of tsunamis. Why weren’t they warned? Why was there no structural damage, no reason for them to suspect that a tsunami was coming?

The quake must have seemed like nothing special to a nation of people who are used to quakes. In a video taken in one Tokyo newsroom during the Fukushima quake, staff were seen to continue typing at their computer stations, totally unfazed by it.

A 9.0-magnitude earthquake is more than 100 times stronger than a 6.8. A 9.0 should have devastated everything within a 1,000-km radius. There should have been widespread urban carnage, even worse than what Kobe suffered.

Yet the Fukushima quake of 3/11/11 did not cause a single structure to collapse.

But don’t take my word for it. Go look up the helicopter footage on YouTube.  Look at the infrastructure the tsunami was crashing onto. Not the slightest bit of damage. Common sense is enough to make you wonder.

Jim Stone did more than wonder. He dug up and analyzed the Japanese seismograms. He proved there was no 9.0 quake, and no epicenter out at sea. Instead, there were three simultaneous quakes of much lesser magnitude, all of them inland.

The authorities lied about the 9.0 quake — made it up out of whole cloth. An earthquake did not cause the tsunami. There must have been another cause.

Reactors Destroyed by Nukes

It turns out that the official explanation for the Fukushima reactor explosions was bogus as well. Nuclear power containment walls are extremely thick and strong. Hydrogen explosions could never have destroyed them. As a historical reference, hydrogen explosions occurred at Three Mile Island and caused no structural damage, nor even any injuries to plant personnel.

Furthermore, Reactor Four contained no fuel on 3/11/11, and was therefore nonoperational — yet it exploded and was destroyed as completely as were the other reactors that day. Reactor Four is like Building 7 at the World Trade Center – an utter impossibility, a blatant smoking gun. A reactor containing no fuel cannot operate; a nonoperational reactor cannot explode unless someone explodes it. The destruction of Reactor Four can only have been the result of sabotage.

Israeli Involvement

In February 2010, Japan offered to enrich uranium for Iran. Soon thereafter, an Israeli firm by the name of Magna BSP secured a contract to run security at the Fukushima Daiichi plant. They installed oversized cameras strongly resembling gun-type nuclear weapons. There is strong evidence that they planted Stuxnet, an Israeli computer virus that attacks Siemens power plant control systems, and which Israel previously used to damage Iran’s nuclear program. Magna BSP also established internet data links in the reactor cores, in blatant violation of international nuclear regulations.

All twelve members of that security team returned to Israel in the week before 3/11/11. In the aftermath of the disaster, the Israelis publicly monitored the reactor cores via their illegal internet data links. Yet no one took them to task for this.

Jim Stone Targeted for Revealing Truth

What caused the tsunami? What destroyed the reactors?

Using skills honed as a former NSA analyst with an engineering background, Jim Stone concluded that Israel was behind the destruction of Fukushima Daiichi. Now he is paying the price.

Stone proved that there was no 9.0-magnitude quake to cause the tsunami. The tsunami must have been artificially induced, perhaps by an atomic bomb placed in the Japan Trench.

The tsunami was blamed for flooding the reactors and causing the explosions. But Stone presents compelling evidence that Israel destroyed the Fukushima Daiichi plant by installing gun-type nuclear weapons in the guise of security cameras, and then setting them off in the tsunami’s aftermath.

Stone demonstrates that the Stuxnet virus continues to distort sensor readings at the disaster site to this day.

Unlike many others in the world of whistle blowers, Stone bases his conclusions on hard evidence and unassailable logic. Anyone can review and challenge his work. He is open to it.

Since releasing his report and making several radio appearances to support it, Jim Stone has been harassed, threatened, unlawfully detained, and is currently facing prison time on completely trumped-up charges.

I have watched the reaction to his work on the net. Some have slandered him. Others have railroaded his work.

No one has debunked him yet.

His conclusions have ramifications that make 9/11 pale in significance.

Why, all across the alternative media, this roaring silence on the work of Jim Stone?

Why haven’t more truth sites simply linked to his report, directing people to review the evidence and decide for themselves?

Some have expressed suspicion that Stone might not be what he claims to be. That’s irrelevant. Facts are facts. The report stands on facts.

The Jerusalem Post reports today that Israel’s military has ordered its Southern Command to prepare for a “large scale” invasion of the Gaza Strip, likely to begin within the next few months.

The revelation is hardly a surprise, as Israeli Military Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz has repeatedly pressed for an invasion of the Gaza Strip over the past few months, while trumpeting the late 2008 invasion as a “great success.”

Officials today indicated that the next invasion would be very much on the same model as 2008, which saw massive Palestinian civilian casualties and destruction of considerable civilian infrastructure, much of which remains unrepaired as an Israeli blockade has prevented construction materials from being imported.

Israeli officials cited “increased weaponry” in the Gaza Strip as the reason for the upcoming invasion, particularly anti-tank weapons. Other than getting some of their tanks blown up, it isn’t clear why they consider this a good reason to invade, as weapons have been flooding much of the region since the Libyan regime fell and their weapons warehouses were looted.

The exact timing of the invasion will also be tricky, as Israel will of course rely on the US to run interference in the UN when the ugliest aspects of the war begin to trickle out. The last invasion came after the 2008 US Presidential election but was virtually wrapped up before President Obama took office. It may be that Israel will try a similar strategy of starting the war after the vote in an effort to keep it from being a political issue in the US.

Both American and Israeli officials say that the decision to postpone a massive joint missile drill scheduled for this spring has nothing to do with hostilities with Iran, although insiders suggest something quite the contrary.

The Austere Challenge 12 drill, originally scheduled for April 2012, was slated to be the largest missile drill ever conducted in cooperation between the US and Israel. A decision to put the drill on hold this week has thus prompted many to speculate as to why best buds America and Israel are having second-guesses. 

“There were a variety of factors at play in this case, but in general, leaders from both sides believe that optimum participation by all units is best achieved later in the year,” Pentagon spokesman Navy Captain John Kirby said, reports Reuters.

Initial reports suggested that the decision was reached by both parties as they bide time to begin testing. The latest reports out of Israel, however, peg the decision as one made by Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu alone, with no insight out of Washington. According to those sources, Israel is upset that the US has acted hesitantly so far in its efforts with Iran, whom is believed to be working on a nuclear weapons program.

Israeli sources speaking anonymously to Debka, a Middle East military news outlet with strong connections to both the Israel and US intelligence communities, say that the decision to postpone the drill does not come as a joint agreement between Tehran and Washington, but is rather a decisions from Netanyahu himself who has become worried by America’s lack of aggression against Iran as of late.

The test, originally slated for this April, would put America’s Theater High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, missile system in operating alongside its ship-based Aegis system and Israel’s own program to work with Arrow, Patriot and Iron Drone missiles. Both nations now put an estimated drill date sometime in later 2012.

The decision to postpone the drill marks the first time ever that American and Israeli forces have put a joint military exercise on the backburner, prompting many to question what underlying factors in play. As tensions between Iran and the US worsen and Washington does little to do as Tehran laughs in their face, some say that Israel is fed up that America, usually a big brother of sorts quick to respond to such behavior, is hiding with its tail between its legs.

One Israel authority speaking under condition of anonymity tells Reuters, “It’s for a host of reasons, mainly logistical, but not the reason you cited [tensions with Iran].”

Others aren’t so sure.

According to the latest report compiled from Debka’s sources, Israeli officials have become increasingly irritated with America’s reluctance against going up with Iran in recent days. Deputy Prime Minister Moshe Yaalon explicitly called the Obama administration “hesitant” on January 15, reports Debka, which was followed by a warning only a day later by the nation’s Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, in which he urged the US to ”move from words to deeds.”

Sources suggest to Debka that Israel and Iran are at the zero hour, and if the US won’t strike first, the Israelis will.

Although the US has made moves that suggest it is prepared to take on Iran, it has done little to actually advance on them as rumors abound of a nuclear weapons program. In recent weeks, America has mobilized troops into the adjacent Strait of Hormuz and the nation of Kuwait, which adds to a massive toll of troops present to the east of Iran in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Additionally, the US has equipped neighboring United Arab Emirates with weaponry. The eventual joint missile drill, if it comes to fruition, will install thousands of US troops in Israel.

To Netanyahu, however, that might not be enough. Postponed drills only underscore Israel’s determination to strike on Iran without consulting Washington.

According to Debka, four errs on part of the Obama administration over the hostilities with Iran is to blame for the postponement of the missile drill. For those following the escalations between Washington and Tehran, they have been apparent from the get-go. With Israel a more easy target than the US though, Netanyahu seems more concerned that a war will erupt than far away America, who brought an end to the eight year Iraq War only a month ago.

Those factors, report Debka, form a list that begins with the capture of a stealth American drone by Iranian forces in early December. Despite hijacking, downing and decoding the plane’s top-secret technology, Washington has done nothing to react other than ask Iran nicely to return the craft. Iran, in return, has only mocked the US.

Since the downing of the RQ-170 drone, other incidents have only worsened relations between the parties. The US offered to impose sanctions on Iran, to which Tehran responded by threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz. Despite a back-and-worth with colossal implications, no side has striked yet.

Adds Debka, Israel forces are also concerned over America’s reluctance to act on Iran’s procurement of a 20-percent grade uranium enrichment program at the underground Fordo facility near Qom. Obama had originally said such a program would have detrimental effects for Israel, and although news of the program’s actuality has existed since early January, the White House has done nothing to react. All Washington has offered, says Debka, is to go about imposing sanctions on the central bank and energy industry of Iran, although those moves will be spread out over a span of the year. In the interim, a lack of restrictions waged at Iran could give them up to 12 months to easily continue their nuclear program and perhaps even launch at attack on Israel or America.

Only last month, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the planned joint exercise served as the Obama administration’s “unprecedented levels of defense cooperation with Israel to back up our unshakable commitment to Israel’s security.” Just weeks later, however, Netanyahu seems ready to fight Iran on its own.

The Ministry of Defense has started preparations for one of the biggest military exercises of the year, the “Caucasus-2012″ drills.

The exercises are taking place in Southern Russia, Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Armenia in September 2012.

One purpose of the large-scale drills this year is to prepare the Russian military for a possible armed conflict between the US and Israel on the one side and Iran on the other.

“It would be a good demonstration of new Russian military power,” Viktor Mizin from the Institute of Strategic Assessment told RT. “We will show that Russia has undergone a revival of its military power, and is now becoming not only a major economic and political player, but also a major global military player.”

A London-based newspaper says agents of Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, are responsible for the recent targeted attack in Tehran which killed an Iranian nuclear scientist last week.

The Sunday Times reported on Monday that the assassination of Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan was similar to operations seen in “espionage films” – planned over a period of many months, and included extensive surveillance and intelligence gathering.

The daily quoted an unnamed Israeli source as claiming that the killing was precursor, not an alternative, to a military strike intended to make rebuilding nuclear facilities more difficult for Iran once they are bombed.

Based on the report, small groups of Mossad agents had been carefully observing key areas in Tehran which they deemed relevant to the assassination of Roshan.

“There is zero tolerance for mistakes. By nature, every failure not only risks the necks of the agents but also risks turning into an international scandal,” said the Israeli source.

The Sunday Times report claimed that Ahmadi Roshan was monitored from a makeshift control room in a safe house nearby as he was preparing to leave for work.

The report added that as Ahmadi Roshan’s bodyguard was driving him to the Natanz uranium enrichment site, where he served as director, a masked person on a motorbike approached the car through traffic, planting on the vehicle, a bomb that was shaped to deliver its full force to the passenger.

Following the operation, the United States moved fast to deny any connection with the assassination.

Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said, “We were not involved in any way with regards to the assassination that took place there.”

The British Foreign Office also said Britain had “no involvement whatsoever” in the attack.

Ahmadi Roshan was a Sharif University of Technology chemical engineering graduate and served as the deputy director of marketing at Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility.

The US, Israel and their allies accuse Iran of pursuing a military nuclear program and have repeatedly threatened Tehran with the “option” of a military strike.

In November 2011, some of the US presidential hopefuls called for conducting covert operations ranging from assassinating Iranian nuclear scientists to launching a military strike on Iran as well as sabotaging Tehran’s nuclear program.

The calls for assassinations are not idle threats as a number of Iranian scientists have been assassinated over the past few years.

According to reports, Ahmadi Roshan had recently met International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors, a fact which indicates that the IAEA has leaked information about Iran’s nuclear facilities and scientists.

US-Israeli discord over action against Iran went into overdrive Sunday, Jan. 15 when the White House called off Austere Challenge 12, the biggest joint war game the US and Israel have every staged, ready to go in spring, in reprisal for a comment by Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Moshe Yaalon in an early morning radio interview. He said the United States was hesitant over sanctions against Iran’s central bank and oil for fear of a spike in oil prices.

The row between Washington and Jerusalem is now in the open, undoubtedly causing celebration in Tehran.

Nothing was said about the 9,000 US troops who landed in Israeli earlier this month for a lengthy stay. Neither was the forthcoming visit by Gen. Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint US Chiefs of Staff, Thursday mentioned.

The exercise was officially postponed from spring 2012 to the last quarter of the year over “budgetary constraints” – an obvous diplomatic locution for cancellation.  It was issued urgently at an unusually early hour Washington time, say DEBKAfile’s sources, to underscore the Obama administration’s total disassociation from any preparations to strike Iran and to stress its position that if an attack took place, Israel alone would be accountable.

Israel’s Deputy Prime minister further inflamed one of the most acute disagreements in the history of US-Israeli relations over the Obama administration’s objections to an Israel military action against Iran’s nuclear sites in any shape or form. Yaalon ventured into tricky terrain when he pointed out that US Congress had shown resolve by enacting legislation for sanctions with real bite. But the White House “hesitated.” He went on to say: “A military operation is the last resort, but Israel must be ready to defend itself.”

The friction was already fueled last week by the deep resentment aroused in Israel by Washington’s harsh condemnation of the assassination last Wednesday, Jan. 11, of the nuclear scientist Prof. Mostafa Ahmadi-Roshan, and absolute denial of any US involvement.

Although Tehran has since accused the United States of the attack, the White House treated it as the defiant sign of an approaching unilateral Israeli military operation against Iran to which the administration is adamantly opposed.

Friday, Jan. 13, the Pentagon announced the substantial buildup of combat power around Iran, stationing nearly 15,000 troops in Kuwait – two Army infantry brigades and a helicopter unit – and keeping two aircraft carriers the region: The USS Carl Vinson, the USS John Stennis and their strike groups.

DEBKAfile’s military sources report that a third aircraft carrier and strike group, the USS Abraham Lincoln, is also on its way to the Persian Gulf.

This massive military buildup indicates that  either President Obama rates the odds of an Israel attack as high and is bolstering the defenses of US military assets against Iranian reprisals – or, alternatively, that the United States intends to beat Israel to the draw and attack Iran itself.

The official purpose of Gen. Dempsey’s visit next Thursday was supposed to be coordination between the US armed forces and the IDF. But his main object was another try to dissuade Israel’s government and military leaders from plans to strike Iran without Washington’s prior consent.

The “budgetary constraints” pretext for cancelling Austere Challenge 12 is hard to credit since most of the money has already been spent in flying 9,000 US troops into Israel this month. Although the exercise in which they were to have participated was billed as testing multiple Israeli and US air and missile defense systems, the exercise’s commander, US Third Air Force Lt. Gen. Frank Gorenc, announced that the event was more a “deployment” than an “exercise.”

Its cancellation leaves Washington and Jerusalem at loggerheads in four main areas:

1.  President Obama believes he is rushing through the sanctions against Iran’s central bank CBI and oil restrictions with all possible speed. He needs time to persuade more governments to support him. Israel sees little real progress in the crawling diplomatic bid for backers and is impatient for action. At the rate the sanctions are going through, they will not be in place before the end of 2012 and by then, Iran will have already acquired a nuclear weapon.

Israeli leaders also suspect that the Obama administration may be foot-dragging deliberately in the hope of encouraging Iran to enter into negotiations and so avoid a military showdown. They point out that all previous rounds of talks were exploited for Iran’s forward leaps in their nuclear weapon drive, free of international hassle.

2.  President Obama insists on the US acting alone in attacking Iran with no Israeli military involvement. This would leave him free to decide exclusively when and how to stage an operation. He is counting on the tightened military and intelligence cooperation he has instituted between the two armed forces and agencies to safeguard Washington against the surprise of a lone Israeli action.

But Israel has declined to make this commitment – even in the face of US officials’ efforts at persuasion.

3.  US military strategists are counting on an Iranian reprisal for an attack on its nuclear sites to be restrained and limited to certain US military assets in the region, Israeli targets and oil installations in the Persian Gulf, including a temporary and partial closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which one fifth of the world’s oil passes.

They expect Israel to refrain from striking back for Iranian attacks and to leave the payback option entirely in American hands. US officials have said they fear an Israeli overkill would tip the entire American military operation into imbalance and generate unforeseen consequences.

The incoming US troops were therefore armed with the sophisticated missile interceptorTHAAD systems (easily transportable Terminal High Altitude Area Defense hit-to-kill weapons) to show the Israeli government that the US would stay on top of all the military moves against Iran – offensive and defensive alike.

On these three points, the US and Israel disagree. Neither Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, nor Defense Minister Ehud Barak or Deputy Prime Minster Yaalon, who are responsible for all decisions on Iran, are willing to put all their trust for defending Israel in American hands or relinquish unilateral military options against Iran. They believe US officials when they assert that the administration is prepared to prevent Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon, but they want to see proof of the pudding and actions to back up the rhetoric. In the light of credible intelligence that Iran is very close to achieving its nuclear goal, Israel is holding on to its military option over American objections.
