A former US official says Washington is deploying military forces around Iran and calling off its wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to prepare for a strike on Iran.
“Washington has made tremendous preparations for a military assault on Iran,” Paul Craig Roberts, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury during Ronald Reagan’s presidency, wrote in an article titled “Will Iran Be Attacked? 44 US military bases surrounding Iran…” published on the Global Research website.
The United States’ oldest aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise , and its strike group are currently running naval drills off the US East coast, in an apparent bid to replicate a potential conflict with Tehran.
The 50-year-old aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, which leads the naval exercise, is to join two other US strike groups in the Persian Gulf by March.
On December 29, Washington signed an agreement with Riyadh, according to which the US will provide the Saudi military with 84 new Boeing F-15SA fighter jets and modernize 70 existing warplanes.
US arms sales to the Persian Gulf countries now stands at a staggering USD 123 billion, with a USD 67.8 billion package for Saudi Arabia, USD 35.6 billion for the United Arab Emirates, USD 12.3 billion for Oman and USD 7.1 billion for Kuwait.
The US Department of Defense has also dispatched some 15,000 troops to neighboring Kuwait in mid January amid its continuing threats of a military strike on Iran over Tehran’s nuclear program.
On February 2, the Washington Post revealed that Pentagon chief Leon Panetta believes that Israel is likely to attack Iran in two to four months.
“In addition to the massive military preparations, there is the propaganda war against Iran that has been ongoing since 1979 when Washington’s puppet, the Shah of Iran, was overthrown by the Iranian revolution,” Craig Roberts said.
He also added that even the recent US warnings to Israel, reportedly issued by its Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey on January 20, not to launch an assault on Iran without Washington’s prior consent smacks of hypocrisy.
“A different way to read Dempsey’s warning is that Obama wants to hold off on attacking Iran until polls show him losing the presidential election. It has generally been the case that the patriotic electorate does not turn out a president who is at war,” the former US official said.
Craig Roberts said US President Barack Obama seeks to appease “both the Israel Lobby and Democratic peace groups, thus upping his vote” by simultaneously announcing that Washington is “in lockstep” with Israel and calling for a “diplomatic solution” to Iran’s nuclear issue.
The senior political analyst stressed that Washington’s power hinges upon its ability to buy leaderships around the world and as soon as the purchasing power of the dollar fades away, “Washington’s power will melt away too.”
“The willingness of peoples around the world to be Washington’s puppets instead of loyal citizens of their own countries is why the West has been able to dominate the world during the modern era. There seems to be an infinite supply of foreign leaders who prefer Washington’s money and favor to loyalty to their own countries’ interests,” the former US official concluded.
